July 24, 2006 - Tonight on the CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer, a CBS reporter in Lebanon was standing in a crowd of people who had allegedly just become refugees in the wake of Israeli bombing of Hezbollah positions. In the background you could see only the shells that remained of bombed out buildings - it looked like Armageddon. Then they cut to a shot of the sky where you could see thousands of little leaflets falling through the air.
CBS reporter, Lee Cowan says this over the video:
"They didn't need a reminder of the danger, but the Israelis gave them one anyway. High over head two explosions, and leaflets filled the sky. The message fluttering down was as simple - as it was cold: THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING - it said."
This made it sound as if Israel's only intention was to crush and massacre the Lebanese people. The tone of the report could only leave one thinking Israel is cruel and evil.
The leaflet shown on CBS was several paragraphs long in Arabic. The more I thought about it the more I realized there was no way it could have said what the CBS reporter said it said. Why? Because I knew that Israel doesn't drop these leaflets to scare people, it drops them to warn them and save their lives.
So I did some internet searching and found the correct translation for the leaflets. THEY, IN FACT, DO NOT EVEN CONTAIN THE PHRASE "this is just the beginning".
Here is what the leaflets really said:
----------To The Lebanese People--------- The Israeli army will increase their bombings in Lebanon against the terrorist actions of Hezbollah in order to defend the state of Israel and its citizens.
For your own safety, and so as not to harm any civilians that are not implicated, you are advised to stay away from the locations where Hezbollah are present and acting against Israel.
This Includes: ·   The Locations where missiles are fired in the direction of Israel ·   The Locations of Hezbollah’s military equipment and arsenals ·   Hezbollah’s centers located in south of Beirut and other areas under its control in the south of Lebanon. ·   The Southern suburbs of Beirut. The location of terrorism. The Israeli Defense Forces call on the Lebanese people and Lebanese army to refrain from aiding, either directly or indirectly, any Hezbollah member. Anyone who does will be putting his life in possible danger.
You should know that the continuing acts of terrorism against Israel are keeping you from having a better future.
